Allah Megh De | Nurer Putula Baba Maulana
Momotaz Begom X Mizan Rahman

In the summer afternoon

Dusty wind blows

Under the burning heat

The thirsty throat gnaws

O’ God give us cloud over our head.

Give us water,

bestow shade.

O’ God give us cloud over our head.

O’ God give us cloud over our head.

Give us water,

bestow shade.

O’ God give us cloud over our head.

O’ God give us cloud over our head.

The sky is crumbled

The land is cracked

The Cloud King is in rage

Now nothing can bring down rain

O’ God give us cloud over our head.

Give us water,

bestow shade.

O’ God give us cloud over our head.

O’ God give us cloud over our head.

O’ God give us cloud over our head.

Give us water,

bestow shade.

O’ God give us cloud over our head.

O’ God give us cloud over our head.

The swamps, the rivers and the lakes run dry

As the aquatic birds without water are left to cry

The swamps, the rivers and the lakes run dry

As the aquatic birds without water are left to cry

O’ God give us cloud over our head.

Give us water,

O’ God give us cloud over our head.

O’ God give us cloud over our head.

O’ God give us cloud over our head.

Give us water,

bestow shade.

O’ God give us cloud over our head.

O’ God give us cloud over our head.

Love birds cry in their own little lair

The dried-up buds of flower wither

Love birds cry in their own little lair

The dried-up buds of flower wither

O’ God give us cloud over our head.

Give us water,

bestow shade.

#Prarthona is an enticing spiritual song commending the divinity in all its forms. During the 1960s through ‘90s, severe droughts were prevalent in Bangladesh. The enchanting calling – “Allah Megh De” was a source of ethereal power for the people in the face of a natural calamity. It gave them hope time and again that God will make it rain and gradually the song become a part of the Bengali folklore. The summoning of the rainclouds can be heard in the song through the enigmatic clapping of khartal. The ancient instrument, mainly used in hymns, makes passage for Maizbhandari in the second part of the song. Originating from the Chittagong region of Bangladesh, the mystical folk genre is an expression of love for the divine and humanity.

“Prarthona” symbolizes the eternity of virtue and how the Real Magic of devotion can withstand the test of time, connecting generations, old and new.
